Quitting the Union

Quitting the union is very easy and you can get a portion of your fees back. You just need to write a letter (see sample below).

To Whom it May Concern,

I wish to cancel my membership in the University Professional and Technical Employees Union effective as of today. I am withdrawing my authorization for payroll to deduct union dues and am requesting that my payroll deduction be made as agency shop fees.

Send it to the payroll department at your campus and a copy to me at "Just Vote uc, PO Box 26847, San Diego CA 92126.

To get a portion of your fees back, write the following:

Dear UPTE Agency Fee Administrator,

I am a California public employee at the University of California represented by UPTE-CWA Local 9119. I have resigned my union membership effective on the date of your receipt of this letter. I am objecting to paying the nonchargeable portion of the agency fee from the date of resignation to the end of the current objection period. I would like to also challenge the calculations and allocations of the chargeable expenses.

Send a copy to me at the Just Vote uc address above as soon as you quit. There is a limited period of time for you to ask to get part of your money back. You could send the letter to UPTE but if UPTE misplaces your letter, there will be no record of your request. I have the letters legally served on UPTE and I retain the copy along with proof of legal service.
